What does the VIN on my car mean?

If you’ve ever filled out the forms needed to register your vehicle or take out an insurance policy on it, you have probably needed to enter its vehicle identification number (VIN). American automakers have been using VINs since the early 1950s, but there was no standardization and it was all but impossible to learn anything from manufacturer to manufacturer. That all changed in 1981 when vehicles sold in the U.S. were required to have the 17-digit code we’re learning about today. If you know what you’re looking at you can learn a great deal of information about your car, truck or SUV. Anyone who has ever wondered, ‘What does the VIN on my car mean,’ this Spitzer Toyota Blog post is going to answer all of your questions. Read the rest of this entry »
